How to Paint uPVC and Composite
Painting uPVC and composite is one of the highest-impact jobs you can do to the outside of a house โ a tired white plastic front door becomes a deep, considered colour in an afternoon. It is also the job where preparation matters most. Our uPVC & Composite paint is self-priming and bonds directly to plastic and composite skins, but it can only bond to a surface that is genuinely clean, dry and lightly keyed. Get the prep right and the finish will last for years.
In Short
- The job: Everything you need to paint uPVC and composite doors, windows and frames properly โ cleaning, keying, masking and two full coats of uPVC & Composite paint.
- What you need: Sugar Soap Concentrate, Sandpaper 320 Grit, Sanding Sponge, Microfibre Cloths (Pack of 3), Premium Painter's Tape, Dust Sheet, Synthetic Brush Set, Short Pile Microfibre Roller, uPVC & Composite Paint, Glass Scraper Blade.

What You'll Need
Step-by-Step Guide
Before You Start
Brand new plastic is not ready to paint.
- ๐ uPVC needs to have been in place and exposed to the weather for at least twelve months before you paint it.
- ๐งช New uPVC still carries mould-release agents and plasticisers on the surface that stop paint bonding properly.
- ๐ฆ๏ธ Weathering opens up the surface very slightly and washes those residues away, which is exactly what you want.
- ๐ช Composite doors do not need to be weathered in the same way โ the skin is a different material and can be painted from new once cleaned and keyed.
- ๐ If in doubt, test an inconspicuous area first and let it cure fully before committing to the whole door.
Pro Tips
โณ Painting new uPVC too early is the single most common cause of peeling. It is worth the wait.
๐ Chalky, faded white plastic is a good sign โ that is a well-weathered surface with plenty for the paint to grip.
Dry, still and mild โ not baking sun.
- ๐ก๏ธ Aim for a dry day between 10ยฐC and 25ยฐC with no rain forecast for at least six hours after your final coat.
- โ๏ธ Avoid painting a surface in direct, strong sunshine โ the paint skins over too quickly and you lose your wet edge.
- ๐ Follow the shade around the building: paint the sunny elevation early or late in the day.
- ๐ฌ๏ธ Avoid windy days, which blow dust, pollen and insects straight into wet paint.
- ๐ Finish early enough that the last coat is touch dry before evening dew forms.
Pro Tips
๐ฑ Check the hourly forecast, not just the daily one โ a single shower will ruin a fresh coat.
๐ช Doors dry faster than you think in a breeze, so work one face at a time and keep moving.
Dust sheets down, furniture off.
- ๐งบ Lay a dust sheet over the threshold, doorstep and any paving, decking or planting directly beneath the frame.
- ๐ฉ Remove the handle, letterplate, knocker, numerals and any escutcheons where you can โ it is far quicker than masking them.
- ๐๏ธ Keep all screws and fittings together in a labelled bag so refitting is straightforward.
- ๐ช Decide now whether you are painting one face or both, and whether the door will need to stay open while it dries.
- ๐ If you are painting a front door, plan how the house will be secured while the door is open.
Pro Tips
๐ธ Photograph the hardware before removing it so you know exactly how it goes back.
๐ Have a spare brush handy to lift insects out of wet paint before they set.
uPVC Windows and Doors
Sugar soap, top to bottom.
- ๐งด Mix sugar soap concentrate as directed and wash the entire surface โ frame, sashes, beading, sills and the door slab.
- ๐ณ๏ธ Work into the drainage channels, the underside of the sills and the corners where dirt collects.
- ๐ช Use firm pressure on green algae staining at the bottom of frames, which is common on north-facing elevations.
- โฌ๏ธ Work from the top down so dirty water runs onto surfaces you have yet to clean.
- ๐งผ Wash the rubber seals as well โ they hold grime that will transfer back onto the frame later.
Pro Tips
๐ซ Do not skip this because the frame "looks clean". Traffic film is invisible and will stop the paint bonding.
๐ชฃ Change the water as soon as it looks dirty โ you are otherwise redistributing grime.
No residue, no moisture.
- ๐ง Rinse the whole surface with clean water to remove every trace of sugar soap residue.
- ๐งฝ Dry off with a clean microfibre cloth rather than leaving it to air dry, which leaves streaks and mineral spots.
- ๐ณ๏ธ Pay attention to water sitting in beading rebates and drainage slots โ it will run out later into wet paint.
- โณ Allow at least 30 minutes after rinsing before you sand, longer in cool weather.
- ๐ Run the back of your hand across the surface โ it should feel squeaky and completely dry.
Pro Tips
๐ฌ๏ธ A dry, breezy morning is ideal for this stage.
๐ฟ Leftover sugar soap residue is as bad as dirt for adhesion โ rinse properly.
Dull the sheen, do not gouge it.
- โจ Sand the whole surface lightly with 320 grit to take the gloss off and give the paint something to grip.
- ๐งฝ Use a sanding sponge on the beading, the moulded detail and any woodgrain-effect texture so you follow the profile rather than flattening it.
- ๐ชถ Keep the pressure light โ you are dulling the sheen, not removing material.
- ๐ Check with a torch held parallel to the surface: any remaining shiny patches have not been keyed.
- ๐ซ Do not use a coarse grit or a power sander โ deep scratches will telegraph through the finished paint.
Pro Tips
๐ Sand right up to the glazing bead and into the corners; missed edges are where peeling starts.
๐ฏ On textured composite or woodgrain uPVC, preserve the grain โ the sponge does this, flat paper does not.
Damp microfibre, then dry.
- ๐งฝ Wipe the entire surface down with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, rinsing the cloth regularly.
- ๐ณ๏ธ Get into the rebates, drainage channels and the underside of the sill where dust settles unseen.
- ๐งป Follow with a dry microfibre cloth so no moisture is left on the surface.
- โณ Allow the frame to dry fully before masking โ around 15 minutes on a mild day.
- ๐ Inspect in low-angle light for any dust you have missed before you open the tin.
Pro Tips
๐งป Always use microfibre โ cotton rags shed lint that will show in the finish.
๐ฌ๏ธ Dust that lands on wet paint cannot be brushed out later; it has to be sanded back.
The rubber gaskets matter most.
- ๐ก๏ธ Run premium painter's tape around the glass, tight to the glazing bead, in long continuous lengths.
- โซ Mask the rubber seals and gaskets carefully โ paint on a seal will crack, peel and stop the door closing cleanly.
- ๐ฉ Mask hinges, the lock body, keeps and any hardware you could not remove.
- ๐ Press every tape edge down firmly with a filling knife or your thumbnail so paint cannot bleed underneath.
- ๐งบ Check the dust sheet is still covering the threshold before you start painting.
Pro Tips
๐ Use fresh tape โ old tape bleeds, tears and leaves adhesive behind.
โ๏ธ Butt tape neatly at corners rather than overlapping heavily, which creates a ridge paint pools against.
Brush the detail, roll the flats.
- ๐๏ธ Cut in all beading, rebates, corners and moulded detail with a synthetic brush, working the paint in rather than flooding it.
- ๐งป Lay off the flat faces of the frame and door slab with a short pile microfibre roller for an even texture.
- ๐ Apply a thin, even coat โ uPVC & Composite paint is designed to build in two thin coats, not one heavy one.
- โฌ๏ธ Work top to bottom and keep a wet edge, finishing a whole section before you stop.
- ๐ง Watch vertical faces closely for runs and brush them out immediately.
Pro Tips
๐จ The first coat will look thin and patchy. That is normal โ resist the urge to overload it.
๐ช Paint the door edges as well; they are visible every time the door is open.
One hour later, same order.
- โฐ Allow at least 1 hour between coats, longer in cool or damp conditions.
- ๐ Check the first coat is touch dry before you start โ it should not feel tacky anywhere.
- ๐๏ธ Apply the second coat in exactly the same order: detail first with the brush, flat faces with the roller.
- ๐ฏ This is the coat that delivers the depth of colour, so keep it even and avoid going back over paint that has begun to set.
- ๐ Step back and check the finish in daylight before you call it done.
Pro Tips
๐ก๏ธ Cold, damp air slows drying considerably โ give it longer rather than rushing.
๐ Plan the second coat so it has several hours of dry weather afterwards.
Composite Doors
Sugar soap, both faces if painting both.
- ๐งด Wash the whole door with sugar soap, working into the panel mouldings, the glazing beads and around the letterplate.
- ๐ Pay extra attention to the area around the handle and lock, where hand grease builds up heavily.
- โฌ๏ธ Work top to bottom, then do the door edges and the frame if you are painting that too.
- ๐ง Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a microfibre cloth.
- โณ Allow the door to dry completely before sanding.
Pro Tips
๐ช Composite skins do not need weathering like uPVC โ but they absolutely need degreasing.
๐งผ If the door has been polished or waxed in the past, wash it twice.
320 grit, following the grain texture.
- โจ Sand the door lightly with 320 grit to remove the factory sheen.
- ๐ชต Most composite doors have a moulded woodgrain texture โ use a sanding sponge and work along the grain direction so the texture is preserved.
- ๐ณ๏ธ Use the sponge into the panel mouldings and around the glazing beads where flat paper cannot reach.
- ๐ชถ Light pressure only; you are dulling the surface, not reshaping it.
- ๐ Check for missed shiny areas with a torch held at a low angle.
Pro Tips
๐ซ Never take a coarse grit or a power sander to a composite skin โ the damage cannot be filled out.
๐ฏ An evenly dulled surface is the goal, not a smooth one.
Dust off, then tape glass and seals.
- ๐งฝ Remove all sanding dust with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, then dry the surface.
- ๐ก๏ธ Mask the glazing, the glazing beads if you are leaving them, and every rubber seal around the door and frame.
- ๐ฉ Mask or remove the letterplate, handle, knocker and numerals.
- ๐งบ Lay the dust sheet across the threshold and doorstep.
- ๐ Press all tape edges down firmly to prevent bleed.
Pro Tips
๐ช Wedge the door open at a comfortable working angle before you start painting.
โซ Painted seals perish โ take the time to mask them properly.
Mouldings first, then the flat panels.
- ๐๏ธ Brush the panel mouldings, glazing beads and any recessed detail first with a synthetic brush.
- ๐งป Roll the flat panels and the stiles and rails with a short pile microfibre roller, laying off in one direction.
- ๐ Keep the coat thin and even โ two thin coats always beat one heavy one.
- ๐ช Do not forget the door edges, particularly the hinge and lock edges.
- ๐ง Check for runs where the flat faces meet the mouldings and brush them out straight away.
Pro Tips
๐ง Working detail first, flats second means brush marks in the mouldings are caught as you roll past them.
๐จ Expect the first coat to look patchy over a dark original colour โ the second coat covers it.
After 1 hour, in the same order.
- โฐ Leave at least 1 hour between coats and confirm the first coat is touch dry.
- ๐๏ธ Repeat the same sequence โ mouldings and detail with the brush, flat faces with the roller.
- ๐ฏ Keep the roller lightly loaded and lay off in a single direction for an even sheen.
- ๐ Inspect the finished door in daylight from an angle before you stop.
- ๐ช Leave the door open and undisturbed once the final coat is on.
Pro Tips
๐ก๏ธ In cooler weather, give the coats longer rather than forcing the timings.
๐ Keep an eye out for insects landing on the wet surface and lift them out immediately.
Curing and Aftercare
While the paint is still fresh.
- ๐ฉน Peel the tape away while the final coat is still slightly soft, pulling back on itself at a shallow angle.
- โซ Take the tape off the rubber seals first so no paint film bridges the gasket and the frame.
- ๐ช If any paint has bridged onto a seal, part it carefully with a sharp blade rather than tearing it.
- ๐ช Leave any stray paint on the glass until it is fully hard, then remove it with a glass scraper blade.
- ๐ฉ Refit hardware only once the paint is fully touch dry.
Pro Tips
โฐ Tape left until the paint has fully hardened will pull the new film off with it.
๐งด Scrape glass dry and at a shallow angle to avoid scratching the pane.
Stop the fresh paint sticking to the seals.
- ๐ช Leave the door open for at least 4 hours after the final coat, and longer if conditions are cool or damp.
- โซ Closing a freshly painted door presses the paint film against the rubber seals, where it can stick and tear.
- ๐ If the door must be closed for security, wait as long as you possibly can and close it gently.
- ๐ Try to finish early enough in the day that the paint is dry before evening dew.
- ๐ช The same applies to opening windows โ leave them ajar rather than shut on wet paint.
Pro Tips
๐ Plan the job for a morning start so the door is not open into the evening.
๐จ A gentle breeze through the opening speeds drying considerably.
7 days before cleaning or heavy use.
- โณ The paint is touch dry within an hour but takes 7 days to reach full hardness.
- ๐งฝ Do not clean or wipe the surface during that period โ a damp microfibre cloth is all it will ever need afterwards.
- ๐ซ Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive pads and pressure washers, now and in the future.
- ๐ฉ Avoid taping anything to the surface, including seasonal decorations, until it is fully cured.
- ๐ก Then stand back โ a repainted front door changes the whole face of a house.
Pro Tips
๐ฅ Stir any leftover paint thoroughly before touching up; pigment settles and unstirred paint will not match.
๐ฆ Order 10% more than you need and keep the surplus sealed โ leftover paint from the original order is the only true colour match you will have.
Product Properties
Can I paint uPVC windows and doors?
Yes. Our uPVC & Composite paint is formulated to bond directly to uPVC without a separate primer, provided the surface is properly prepared. The one condition is age. The uPVC must have been in place and exposed to the weather for at least twelve months. New uPVC still carries mould-release agents and surface plasticisers from manufacture, and paint will not bond reliably to them. Weathering washes those residues away and very slightly opens the surface, which is exactly what you want.
How long does uPVC need to be weathered before painting?
At least twelve months of outdoor exposure. This is the single most important rule of the job. Painting uPVC too early is the most common cause of peeling and flaking, and no amount of sanding will compensate for it. Chalky, slightly faded white plastic is a good sign โ it means the surface is ready. If you are unsure, paint a small inconspicuous area first, let it cure fully for seven days, then try to lift it with tape.
Do composite doors need to be weathered too?
No. Composite door skins are a different material and can be painted from new. They still need the same cleaning and keying: wash with sugar soap, rinse, dry completely, then sand lightly with 320 grit along the direction of the moulded woodgrain.
Do I need a primer on uPVC or composite?
No. Our uPVC & Composite paint is self-priming on both substrates when they have been correctly prepared. Preparation does the job a primer would otherwise do: sugar soap to remove grease and traffic film, a full rinse, complete drying, and a light key with 320 grit. Skip any one of those and no primer would save the finish anyway.
What grit sandpaper should I use on uPVC?
320 grit. You are dulling the sheen, not removing material. Use flat paper on flat faces and a sanding sponge on beading, drainage channels, moulded panel detail and woodgrain texture โ the sponge follows the profile instead of flattening it. Never use a coarse grit or a power sander: deep scratches in plastic cannot be filled out and will telegraph through the paint.
How do I clean uPVC before painting?
Wash the whole surface with a sugar soap solution โ frame, sashes, beading, sills, door slab and edges โ working from the top down. Pay particular attention to drainage channels, the underside of sills and green algae staining at the bottom of frames. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove every trace of sugar soap residue and dry with a microfibre cloth rather than leaving it to air dry. Traffic film is invisible. A frame that looks clean almost never is.
What weather do I need to paint uPVC and composite?
A dry, still day between 10ยฐC and 25ยฐC with no rain forecast for at least six hours after your final coat. Avoid strong direct sunshine on the surface you are painting โ the paint skins over too fast and you lose your wet edge. Follow the shade around the building instead. Avoid windy days, which blow dust, pollen and insects into wet paint, and finish early enough that the last coat is dry before evening dew.
Should I mask the rubber seals?
Yes, always. This is the detail most people skip and most regret. Paint that lands on a rubber gasket will crack, peel and can bond the door to the frame. Mask every seal with premium painter's tape, press the edges down firmly, and peel the tape away while the final coat is still slightly soft. If any paint has bridged onto a seal, part it carefully with a sharp blade rather than tearing it.
How many coats does uPVC and composite need?
Two full coats, applied thin, with at least 1 hour between them. The first coat will look thin and patchy, particularly over a dark original colour. That is normal โ resist the urge to overload it. The second coat delivers the depth of colour and the durability.
What tools should I use?
A good quality synthetic brush for beading, rebates, mouldings and edges, and a short pile microfibre roller for the flat faces of doors and wide frame sections. Work detail first and flat faces second, so any brush marks in the mouldings are caught and smoothed as you roll past them. Synthetic bristles perform far better than natural bristles with water-based paint.
How long before I can close a freshly painted door?
Leave the door open for at least 4 hours after the final coat, and longer in cool or damp conditions. Closing a freshly painted door presses the paint film against the rubber seals, where it can stick and tear when you next open it. If the door must be closed for security, wait as long as you possibly can and close it gently.
Can I paint uPVC window frames without removing the glass?
Yes. Mask the glass tight to the glazing bead with premium painter's tape in long continuous lengths, pressing the inner edge down firmly with a filling knife so paint cannot bleed underneath. If any paint does reach the glass, leave it until fully hard and then remove it with a glass scraper blade held at a shallow angle.
Can I paint a dark colour over a white uPVC door?
Yes. All 180 colours in our palette are available in uPVC & Composite paint, including deep, saturated shades. Dark colours on south-facing doors absorb more heat, which is why the formula uses UV-resistant pigments and a flexible film that moves with the substrate rather than cracking.
Will the paint peel or crack over time?
Not if the preparation is right. Almost every failure on uPVC traces back to one of three things: the plastic was too new, the surface was not properly degreased, or it was never keyed. Do those three properly and the finish is a flexible, UV-resistant film designed for full exterior exposure.
How do I clean painted uPVC and composite afterwards?
Wait until the full 7 day cure period has passed, then a slightly damp microfibre cloth is all that is needed for most marks. Soap and water handles anything more stubborn. Avoid chemical cleaners, abrasive pads and pressure washers, both now and in future โ they will damage the paint film over time.
How long does uPVC and composite paint take to dry?
Touch dry in around 1 hour and recoatable after 1 hour in good conditions. Full hardness takes 7 days. During that period avoid cleaning the surface, taping anything to it, or subjecting it to heavy use.
Can I touch up the paint later?
Yes โ but stir the tin thoroughly first. Pigment settles over time and paint that has been sitting will not be the correct colour until fully mixed. Stir for 1โ2 minutes with a drill and mixing paddle. If you apply paint from an unstirred tin, the touch up will not match, and the remaining paint in the tin will be off going forward.
Will my colour match if I order more paint later?
Not guaranteed. Paint is made using naturally occurring raw materials that vary slightly from one production batch to the next. These shifts are small but can be visible when tins from different batches are used side by side. Every tin within a single order is made from the same batch of base and the same batches of colourant. Our recommendation: order 10% more than you need and keep the surplus sealed.
