Greige & Mushroom Paint

Greige blends grey and beige, while mushroom brings an earthier note, often with red-brown warmth. These quiet neutrals suit layered living rooms and kitchens with natural timber, related shades and textured fabrics rather than sharp white contrasts. Every shade is available as a 60ml sample to compare beside your floor, woodwork and furnishings.

Greige sits between grey and beige: warmer and sandier than a cool grey, more restrained than a golden beige. It isn't one fixed colour; some greiges lean grey, others lean beige. Mushroom is its earthier cousin, often warmed with a touch of red-brown. Both are wonderfully forgiving backdrops, and experts suggest layering them at different depths with natural wood and tactile fabrics rather than reaching for brilliant white.

Pale greiges and soft stones

Soft stone neutrals with warmth rather than cream.

Best in north-, south-, east- and west-facing rooms

Light, calm and easy in almost any room. These are the greiges to choose when you want warmth without obvious cream.

All four suit north-, east- and west-facing rooms, where their brown, green and red undertones stay gentle in cooler daylight, and Plough™ suits south-facing rooms too.

Classic greige

Balanced grey and beige for softly layered rooms.

Best in north-, south-, east- and west-facing rooms

A true mid-way grey-beige. In a living room, experts suggest layering it with rugs and textured furnishings and painting the skirting a paler related shade for gentle definition, rather than a sharp white line.

All five suit east- and west-facing rooms. Fletching™, Bobbin™ and Chissy™ also suit north-facing rooms, Peverel™ and Chissy™ suit south-facing rooms, and Heron™ is best kept to east- or west-facing rooms. Match the shade to the daylight: cooler rooms need warmth, while warm sun lets you use a cooler greige.

Mushroom and deeper warm neutrals

Earthy neutrals for timber kitchens and gentle contrast.

Best in north-, south-, east- and west-facing rooms

Earthy and grounding. Little Greene uses a red-oxide-warmed mushroom with a pale related neutral on woodwork and natural timber as an organic alternative to a stark white kitchen, an idea that works beautifully with these shades.

All three suit east- and west-facing rooms. Wattle™ also suits north-facing rooms, Olympic™ suits south-facing rooms, where its green undertone relaxes in warm sun, and Erewash™ suits every direction. Compare their earthy warmth against the timber and pale related neutral you plan to keep.

Greige pairings that work

Layer related neutrals with timber and textured fabrics.

Following the related-neutral approach experts recommend: Fletching™ walls with Daub™ woodwork; a light-to-dark scheme of Whalebone™, Heron™ and Wattle™; or Plough™ and Erewash™ layered with natural timber.

Put them on two or three walls, including the wall opposite the window, at eye level and lower down.

  3. Step 3

Live with them for a day or two

Look in the morning, the afternoon and under your evening lamps. Move them around until you are sure.

Your questions, answered

What is greige paint?

A blend of grey and beige, ranging from warm grey to muted beige. It gives the calm of grey with the warmth of beige.

Is mushroom the same as greige?

They overlap. Mushroom is an earthier description, and often has a touch of red-brown warmth that a typical greige does not.

Does greige work in a north-facing room?

Yes, if you choose one with enough warmth. Cool north light makes pale greys look flat, so test your greige against that cool daylight before you commit.

Colours for north-facing rooms

What woodwork colour goes with mushroom walls?

A paler related neutral gives soft, cohesive contrast; natural timber works beautifully too. A brilliant white can make mushroom look dull.
