Raw umber

A natural brown earth containing iron and manganese compounds; raw distinguishes it from heat-treated burnt umber.

Umber sits alongside ochre and in the traditional earth-pigment palette. Different deposits produce different browns. The familiar raw/burnt distinction records processing as well as colour, preserving a small piece of workshop language in everyday colour names.

Iron and manganese compounds contribute to umber’s brown colour. Raw umbers can mute brighter mixtures and introduce earthy depth. Their colour and working behaviour vary with mineral content and the medium in which they are dispersed.

PBr7 covers several natural brown , including umbers and siennas. It is not an exact shade specification, and the word umber does not prove a particular geographical source.

These articles explain pigment and mineral families, not the sourcing or complete formulation of any Cameron Colours paint. Historical names can cover different materials. Follow the product guidance and safety data for the paint you use; do not handle or heat raw pigment powders at home.
