Paint Peeling or Scratching Off Laminate and Flat-Pack Furniture?

Laminate is made to repel things. Paint has to be given a grip.

Laminate, melamine and foil-wrapped furniture are designed to be smooth, hard and wipe-clean, which is exactly why paint struggles on them. If paint scratches off with a fingernail, peels at the edges or lifts in strips under masking tape, it almost always comes down to the surface not being cleaned and keyed, or the paint being used before it has fully cured. Both are fixable, and once you know what the surface needs, painted flat-pack can look and wear beautifully.

At a glance

  • Laminate and melamine are non-porous: paint can only grip a clean, keyed surface.
  • Degrease thoroughly, then key the whole surface to an even, dull matt.
  • Thin coats, 1–2 hours apart, rather than heavy ones.
  • Full adhesion takes 7 days: the fresh paint is fragile until then.
  • Peeling foil wrap or swollen chipboard must be repaired first.

Why paint comes off laminate

Nothing to soak into, so it needs keying.

Wood and plaster are porous, so paint can grip into them. Laminate and melamine are not: they are smooth plastic or resin-impregnated surfaces designed to resist stains and moisture. Paint applied straight onto them sits on top, held only by whatever grip the surface offers. Polish, silicone sprays, kitchen grease and fingerprints reduce that grip further.

The other common cause is impatience. Paint on laminate builds its bond over days, not hours. Furniture put back into use, drawers slammed or tape applied in the first week can lift paint that would have been fine a few days later.

How to prepare laminate properly

Degrease, key the whole surface, then remove all dust.

Remove handles and hinges. Clean every surface with sugar soap or a degreaser, paying special attention to edges and around handles, rinse with clean water and let it dry. Then key the entire surface with a fine abrasive until the factory sheen has gone and it is evenly dull all over. You are not trying to sand through the laminate, just to give the paint a grip. Vacuum and wipe away all the dust with a microfibre cloth.

Check for damage before you paint. Lifting foil wrap, chipped edges or chipboard that has swollen from water need gluing, filling or replacing, because paint will not hold them together.

Fixing paint that is already peeling

Take it back to sound and start again.

Paint that has lost its grip will keep peeling. Scrape or peel off everything loose; on a badly affected piece, it is often quicker to remove it all. Sand the edges of any remaining sound paint smooth, then clean and key as above and repaint the whole panel, not just the bare patch. For a few small chips on an otherwise sound finish, lightly sand the chip edges, clean and dab in thin coats.

Where our paint helps, and where it cannot

Self-priming for keyed laminate, but the first week is fragile.

Our Flat-Pack Paint is self-priming, developed to bond to laminate and melamine that has been correctly cleaned and keyed, without a separate primer. It is self-levelling, so thin coats flow out smoothly, and high opacity usually gives a solid colour in two coats, though three may be needed depending on the surface and the colour change. Full adhesion develops over the 7-day cure, so a freshly painted laminate surface is still fragile: handle it gently, keep tape off and do not clean it until that first week is up.

Sample it the way we would

  1. Step 1

    Paint your peel-and-sticks

Each £5.99 sample comes with three paintable peel-and-sticks. Give them two coats and let them dry fully.

  2. Step 2

    Stick them around the room

Put them on two or three walls, including the wall opposite the window, at eye level and lower down.

  3. Step 3

Live with them for a day or two

Look in the morning, the afternoon and under your evening lamps. Move them around until you are sure.

Your questions, answered

Why does my paint scratch off laminate?

Usually because the surface was not degreased and keyed, or the paint has not cured yet. Full adhesion takes 7 days on laminate.

Do I need to sand laminate before painting?

Yes, lightly. Key the whole surface with a fine abrasive until the sheen has gone, so the paint has something to grip.

Do I need a primer on melamine?

Not with our self-priming Flat-Pack Paint, as long as the surface has been properly cleaned and keyed.

Can I paint over peeling foil-wrapped doors?

Not until the foil is repaired or removed. Paint cannot hold lifting foil down.
